Transfers

When a resident concludes that a transfer to another Residency Training Program might be beneficial, the Resident and the Program Director must be assured that the request to transfer is managed in an objective, fair, equitable and confidential manner.

The three possible routes for transferring during residency training include internal transfers between programs at the same university, external transfers between programs at two different universities, and transfers through the second iteration of the R1 CaRMS match.

The application period for the upcoming academic year is as follows:

  • Internal Transfers: Applications accepted between December 15, 2024 - January 5, 2025
  • External Transfers: Applications accepted between February 1, 2025 – March 31, 2025
  • Transfers via CaRMS: Applicant Timeline

Non-University of Calgary Residents

For residents currently enrolled in a Canadian University wishing to transfer to the University of Calgary, available routes of entry include the second iteration of the R1 CaRMS match, and the external transfer process.

Applications for the external transfer process must be submitted to the resident’s home university PGME office as per the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada  National Transfer Guidelines. Only the programs listed above would be eligible to accept an external transfer.

Current University of Calgary Residents

Residents interested in transferring programs are subject to the terms outlined in the University of Calgary Resident Transfer Policy.  Residents are strongly encouraged to review the Resident Transfer Process Guide, which outlines the various mechanisms for transfer.

Internal TransfersExternal Transfers
Current Residents interested in transferring to another program at the University of Calgary are required to participate in the internal transfer process, which was developed to ensure that trainees are provided equal opportunity to apply for available positions. Interested applicants must submit a completed Internal Transfer Request and Consent Form   to pgmetransfers@ucalgary.ca

For subspecialty transfer, you must have completed the corresponding core program.

Applications are only accepted during the application period. Only complete applications will be reviewed. Requirements and instructions are listed in the application form.

External Transfers via CaRMS

For current residents who require either a Letter of Standing or a Summary of their training record to be issued by the PGME office should submit their request to pgmetransfers@ucalgary.ca at least three weeks prior to the document submission deadline stipulated by CaRMS.

Any evaluations, ITERS, and field notes required by CaRMS can be obtained by the resident through the individual platforms (One45, MedSIS, FMeCAP), and will not be supplied by the PGME office.

External Transfers Outside CaRMS

The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada has produced National Transfer Guidelines for trainees wishing to transfer from one Canadian University to another. These guidelines are intended to provide a transparent process that is clear to both the Resident and Universities involved. Prior to engaging in discussion regarding a transfer, it is the responsibility of the Resident to review the national guidelines as well as their school’s transfer guideline / policy.

Current residents wishing to transfer externally outside CaRMS are required to submit a completed External Transfer Request Form  to pgmetransfers@ucalgary.ca. Applications are only accepted during the application period. Only complete applications will be reviewed. A complete application is required for each program of interest. Requirements and instructions are listed in the application form.
