MPAS Admissions Requirements

The University of Calgary Master of Physician Assistant Studies program seeks applicants with a strong academic background and a commitment to success in a rigorous program. The admissions committee will consider each applicant’s strengths while selecting the best qualified candidates who align with the program’s mission.

Admissions Requirements

Admissions requirements for the Master of Physician Assistant Studies program include:

  • Being a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, or individual with refugee status in Canada.
  • Completion of a four-year baccalaureate degree from an institution recognized by the University of Calgary. 
  • Minimum GPA of 3.20 (on the University of Calgary four-point system) calculated over the most recent 60 units completed; this is based on the last two years of the undergraduate degree consisting of a minimum of 60 units.
  • English Language Proficiency. 

         For applicants required to provide proof of proficiency in the English language: 

              a minimum internet-based TOEFL score of 105 (with no section less than 20), or 

              a minimum IELTS Academic version overall band score of 7.5 (with no individual band less than 6.0), or 

              a CAEL overall score of 70 (with no section less than 70), or 

              a minimum PTE academic version score of 75, or 

              Duolingo with score of 145 (with no sub-score below 125), or 

              Cambridge C1 Advanced or Cambridge C2 Proficiency with a score of 200, or 

              This requirement can also be met by completing the Academic Communication Certificate with a minimum grade of "A-" in each course. 

  • Prior client-facing health care experience. This may include direct hands-on patient care experience in a clinical setting, clinical placements in healthcare education programs, or volunteer experience.  Applicants will be required to list the number of hours, location of experience, and role, as well as provide a verifier name and phone number.
  • Provision of two professional referees who can complete a brief reference form in support of the applicant:

    Both referees must be individuals who have directly supervised, managed, or overseen the applicant in a professional setting. Please note that a professional/organizational email address is required for each reference.

    At least one of these referees must specifically be someone who has supervised or managed the applicant during one of their healthcare experiences (HCEs).

    Examples of acceptable references include current or previous employers, direct supervisors, clinical preceptors, volunteer coordinators, academic advisors, etc.

  • A personal essay (500 words maximum) indicating what skills and attributes the applicant possesses to succeed in the program, and how the applicant sees their future role as a Physician Assistant.

Applicants must also meet the Faculty of Graduate Studies Admissions Requirements.

The MPAS program office cannot confirm if an applicant’s client-facing health care experience is appropriate either prior to or during the application process.
 

Please note that meeting the minimum admission criteria does not guarantee acceptance into the program. All applicants with complete applications will be ranked according to evidence from reference letters, personal essays, experiences described in the application, Casper score, and GPA. 

Prerequisites

  1. Completion of the following coursework at the post-secondary level with a minimum grade of B (3.00 on a 4.00 scale or equivalent) in each of these courses:
  • Human Anatomy (3.0 units)
  • Human Physiology (3.0 units)
  1. Completion of an Indigenous education course. Matriculants offered admission will be required to provide proof of course completion by the start of the program.

    Options include (choose only one):   
  • Completion of the Indigenous Canada MOOC (online). Completion should be evidenced by certificate or user screen shot. 
  • University of Calgary Indigenous Relations Training Program. Completion should be evidenced by acknowledgement / confirmation of participation.
  • Successful completion of a minimum 3-unit course in Indigenous studies from a post-secondary institution as evidence on an official transcript. If the content of the course is not clearly evidenced by a transcript, students may be required to provide a copy of the course outline. Examples of University of Calgary courses include:  INDG 201, 303, 343, 345, 350, 351, 395, 397, 399, 400, 407, 415, 492, 493, 494, 495, 496.
  • A degree, diploma, or certificate in Indigenous studies. Completion should be evidenced on an official transcript. 

3.  Completion of the Computer-Based Assessment for Sampling Personal Characteristics (Casper®).

  • Casper: Casper is an online evaluation that assesses non-cognitive skills and interpersonal characteristics that are important for success in the MPAS program. All applicants are required to complete Casper as part of their application.

Preferred Criteria

  • Candidates who have shown a commitment to service in their communities.    Applicants will be required to list the number of hours, location of experience, and role, as well as provide a verifier name and phone number.
  • Alberta residents. Applicants will be considered Alberta residents if they meet one of the following criteria:

    I. Have been physically present in Alberta (or NWT, Yukon or Nunavut) on a day-to-day basis for 24 consecutive months at some point between their 15th birthday and the first day of classes (of the year for which they are applying).

     II. Have been on active duty for the 24 months prior to classes starting with the Canadian Armed Forces (not including members of the reserves) or the RCMP.
 

Transcripts for Application

The MPAS program will assess your application based on the unofficial transcripts submitted.

If your application is successful, final official transcripts will be requested with your offer of admission. 

All applicants are required to submit transcripts from all post-secondary institutions. This includes transcripts from any institution where the degree was awarded from, any institution where a transfer credit was received towards a program of study, or where any independent course work was completed.

(**Students in their final year of a bachelor's degree program must complete their degree before the application deadline, along with all other admission requirements.)

February 2, 2025 23:59 MT: Deadline to submit application, pay application fee, upload unofficial transcripts, supplemental form and personal essay
February 10, 2025 23:59 MT: Deadline to submit reference forms
Early April, 2025: Interview invitation
Early May, 2025: Online Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs)
End of May, 2025: Admission Offer

Incomplete applications will not proceed in the review process.

Casper will send the exam result to the program directly. The last exam date of Casper for F25 MPAS admission is January 21, 2025.
