INTRODUCTION

Inequities continue to exist in the workforce, including within academia, where higher-level positions are predominantly held by White Canadians, while Black Canadians are overrepresented in lower tiers. Additionally, Black individuals are significantly underrepresented in senior academic roles. To tackle child health disparities in Canada, it is essential to build and strengthen the capacity of Black researchers and those working with Black communities. The main purpose of our three-day Summer Institute is to train and build the capacity of Black graduate students, early career researchers and researchers interested in Black child and youth well-being.

ABOUT THE BLACK SCHOLAR SUMMER INSTITUTE

Black Child and Youth Wellness Scholar Summer Institute is the first of its kind, organized by the Black and Racial Equity (BARE) Research Program as part of the Transforming the Lives of Black Children and Youth project. The event theme is “Black Child and Youth Engagement, Capacity Building.” We hope to support around 30 individuals from Black graduate student groups and early career researchers across Canada to attend the Summer Institute. Training will be provided on diverse topics including, grant writing, writing for publication, research methodologies, data analysis, research ethics, knowledge mobilization, research leadership, presentation skills, equity/diversity/inclusion, and substantive topics related to Black child and youth well-being in Canada.
