Support to Entry Program (STEP)

The Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) recognizes the importance of supporting a diverse group of applicants to contribute to health care and health science in Alberta.

The Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) is pleased to announce the launch of the Support to Entry Program (STEP)

The CSM recognizes the academy’s historic exclusion and discrimination against people who identify as Indigenous, Black, racialized minorities, 2SLGBTQ+, persons with diverse abilities and those facing financial barriers. STEP is designed to address barriers that equity-deserving groups encounter when preparing to enter medicine and health science studies and was developed in collaboration with CSM current students.  Prospective applicants to STEP have the option of applying for any or all of the initiatives described below:

MCAT Preparation Materials: A limited number of MCAT resource materials to help applicants prepare for the MCAT exam are available.

NOTE: all of the MCAT Online Prep Bundles are now gone

Mentorship: Prospective applicants will be matched with a current student at CSM who will provide guidance, as applicable, related to the application process, interview support, and general questions about medical and/or graduate health science studies.  The mentorship program is available for those applying for medical school and those applying to enter graduate health science.

Medical School Application and Interview Support: For those applicants who have applied for the 2021-22 cycle, and are invited to an interview, feedback and advice on the interview process will be provided by current medical students.

For those applicants planning to apply for the 2022-23 cycle and have questions about the upcoming application process and/or would like feedback on their file documents, additional supports are planned.

MCAT Preparation Course: The MCAT Preparation Course is a 6-week program, planned for spring 2022, facilitated by current medical students. It will be offered to a limited number of applicants who come from underrepresented communities, with priority given to those who have not previously received MCAT resources through STEP.
