MDBC Program Specific Awards

International students admitted to this program may receive a MDBC Entrance Award (subject to available funding).
Entrance Awards are paid out one month after students begin their program. Students may receive a second year’s payment depending on available program funding.
The intent of this reimbursement is to assist international students with the higher tuition fees that they pay.
Prize for First Author Research Papers
There is a limit of 3 prizes per person for the duration of the student's graduate program.
This prize has been created in recognition of research achievements made by MDBC graduate students. Prize value is $1000. Students may apply as soon as their publication has been accepted; however, applications must be accompanied by an acceptance letter from a peer-reviewed journal
Eligibility:
• Student must be registered in the MDBC Graduate Program at the time the paper is published and when the prize is paid out.
• Student must be the first (or co-first) author of the article
• The publication must be a peer-reviewed research article directly relevant to the student’s thesis research. It must contain novel research findings and cannot be a review of the field.
• All program requirements must be met at the time of application (submission of research proposal, annual progress reports, minutes of regular supervisory committee meetings, etc)
Excellence in Research Achievement Award
There is one prize for MDBC MSc and PhD students, 1 award in each category.
This prize has been created to encourage MDBC graduate students to publish high quality research early in program and thereby enhance competitive ranking with external scholarship sources and future postdoctoral fellowship positions. MDBC students may self nominate with supervisor approval by providing an original research publication that is accepted in a peer-reviewed journal. Prize value is $2000.
• MSc award: Students must have had the paper accepted for publication within 24 months of program entry.
• PhD award: Students must have had the paper accepted for publication within 24 months of program entry if previously completed an MSc, or 28 months if transferred to a PhD program (must transfer by Dec 31st of the year in which the application is made).
To submit an application, fill in the Submission Form and attach a copy of your accepted publication.
Eligibility:
• Student must be registered in the MDBC Graduate Program at the time the paper is published and when the prize is paid out.
• Student must be the first (or equivalent) author of the article. In the event there is co-first authorship with one or more additional MDBC students, then the award will be divided with the other MDBC student authors.
• The publication must be a peer-reviewed research article directly relevant to the student’s thesis research. It must contain novel research findings and cannot be a review of the field.
• The supervisor must have supervisory privileges in the MDBC graduate studies program
• All program requirements must be met at the time of application (submission of research proposal, annual progress reports, minutes of regular supervisory committee meetings, etc).
Travel Awards

Travel Awards are announced throughout the year by the Graduate Program Administrator. Check your ucalgary.ca email address often for these announcements.
Each student may receive 1 (MSc) or 2 (PhD) travel awards during their degree program.
To submit an application, fill in the travel Award Form and attach your abstract.

Carol Braat Memorial Award

Award of a $200.00 book prize to a meritorious MSc student in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, presented at the departmental Celebration of Excellence as a tribute to Carol Braat, a former MSc student in the BMB department.

Gordon H. Dixon Award

A $500.00 award to a meritorious doctoral student in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, presented at the departmental Celebration of Excellence as a tribute to Dr. Dixon's outstanding contributions to scholarship and education. The awardee also presents a lecture.
