Medical Science

Welcome to the Medical Science Graduate Program

The Medical Science (MDSC) Graduate Program has been in existence for more than 25 years. It is one of the largest graduate programs within the University of Calgary. Degrees in MDSC are available as an M.Sc., Ph.D. or combined M.D./M.Sc. or M.D./Ph.D. The program encompasses a broad range of topics including specializations ranging from cancer biology to critical care.

The majority of our students apply for and are successful in receiving national, provincial, and university awards and scholarships during their training programs.

Many of our graduates have the research skills and abilities to succeed in independent scientific careers in academic and non-academic settings. As a result, our graduates have been successful in obtaining postdoctoral positions leading to faculty positions at leading universities in Canada and abroad.

Note: For queries on graduate and undergraduate level MDSC designated courses please refer to the Courses section.

Program Specific Awards

Submitted by sanderso on Fri, 02/19/2016 - 2:02pm

The Medical Science Graduate Program has funds allocated annually from the Faculty of Graduate Studies as well as the Cumming School of Medicine, based upon enrollment numbers. The funding that is allocated includes units of Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) awards.  These awards are only available to students receiving funding from their supervisors (3rd Party or self-funded students are not eligible).

There are 3 ways in which students can receive scholarship funding from these sources:

1. Students paying full program fees:

Scholarships are paid to all Medical Science MSc and PhD students paying FULL program fees (award and non award holders). Students that qualify will be paid on the first anniversary date of their enrolment in the Medical Science graduate program and at the end of each anniversary year when full program fees were paid.   All program requirements must be met for students to be eligible for this award.  Once all the requirements have been met, please complete the  Medical Science Program Specific Award form and submit it to the program administrator - MDSC PSA form.

2. Academic Productivity

Scholarships are paid to MSc and PhD students based on academic productivity. The student must show proof of a 1 st author, peer-reviewed paper that is directly related to the student's degree program. The amount available is $250 per application. Priority is given to first time applicants in any year of his/her program. Proof is provided by submitting a Letter of Acceptance from the publisher signed by the student's supervisor. The Letter of Acceptance must be received during the time the student is enrolled in the program. The Letter of Acceptance must be submitted with a completed Medical Science Program Specific Award form.

3. International conference or scientific meeting

Scholarships are also paid to MSc and PhD students attending an international conference or scientific meeting. The student must show proof of registration at the conference or meeting and a letter of acknowledgement from the organizers attesting that his/her paper, abstract or other project has been accepted for presentation.  The amount available is $350-$1000 per application. Priority is given to first time applicants in any year of his/her program. The award will be paid to students while they are enrolled in the program. The Letter of Acceptance, receipts totaling the amount of the award must be submitted along with a completed Medical Science Program Specific Award form.
