Fellowship

A clinical fellowship is an opportunity for physicians to obtain advanced training and/or to acquire specialized expertise not normally acquired during residency training. Clinical fellows must be recognized specialists or family physicians. Clinical fellowship training is usually one to two years of “additional” experiences for recognized specialists or family physicians.  Fellowship training does not lead to certificate by the College of Family Physicians of Canada, le College des Médecins du Quebec, or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). Clinical fellowship on its own is not a pathway to permanent practice for specialist or family physicians in Alberta.

There are three categories of fellows:

  • Domestic Fellow: Trainees who are Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents and who do not require a work permit.
  • International Medical Graduate Fellow: Trainees who obtain their medical degree outside Canada and are not Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents and require a work permit.
  • Sponsored: Trainees who are sponsored by a sponsoring agent with an existing educational contract with the University of Calgary and may require a work permit.

Information regarding the specific category is below. For inquiries, contact pgmefellowships@ucalgary.ca.
