About Us

What is Choosing Wisely?

Choosing Wisely Canada

Choosing Wisely Canada is a national clinician-led campaign that promotes conversations between healthcare providers and patients about unnecessary tests, treatments, and procedures. Working with specialty societies across the country, the campaign develops evidence-based recommendations that identify practices that may be overused or unlikely to benefit patients.

Choosing Wisely Alberta

Choosing Wisely Alberta represents the provincial arm of this broader movement. We align with national recommendations while supporting implementation strategies tailored to Alberta’s health system context. By connecting provincial priorities with national evidence, we help translate recommendations into meaningful practice change.

Our Alberta Focus

Choosing Wisely Alberta collaborates with provincial partners — including Alberta Health Services, Primary Care Networks (PCNs), academic institutions, and research groups — to advance shared priorities in reducing low-value care. Our work is grounded in Alberta-specific data, system needs, and opportunities for impact.

We emphasize clinician engagement, local leadership, and quality improvement approaches that support sustainable change. Through implementation initiatives, educational resources, and system-level partnerships, we aim to embed Choosing Wisely principles into everyday practice across acute care, primary care, and academic settings.

Why It Matters

Reducing unnecessary tests and treatments improves the patient experience by minimizing harm, anxiety, and avoidable interventions. It also frees up clinical capacity and resources, helping ensure that patients receive the right care, at the right time, for the right reason.

By addressing low-value care, Choosing Wisely Alberta contributes to a more sustainable health system -  one that supports high-quality outcomes, responsible stewardship of resources, and a culture of continuous improvement across the province.
