Role Definitions

  • Assumes the responsibility and accountability for the development, delivery, and evaluation of accredited CPD activities
  • Responsible for the receipt and distribution of financial and in-kind support of the CPD activity
  • Underwrites the financial risk of the CPD activity
  • Purpose is to plan scientific content and programming and guide in its delivery
  • Accountable to the Primary CPD Provider/Physician Organization
  • The SPC is responsible to adhere to the National Standard for Support of Accredited CPD Activities, Canada Medical Association Policy: Guidelines for Physicians in Interactions with Industry, and accreditation standards of College of Family Physicians and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, as applicable.
  • The SPC may consider data or advice from all sources, but must ensure that decision-making related to the following CPD program elements is under its exclusive control:
    • Identification of the educational needs of the intended target audience;
    • Development of learning objectives;
    • Selection of educational methods;
    • Selection of speakers,  moderators, facilitators and authors;
    • Development and delivery of content; and
    • Evaluation of outcomes.
  • Offers a broad range of evidence-based learning opportunities to physicians, other health professionals and the public in a variety of formats including face to face, online and blended learning.
  • Provide support with educational development, accreditation services, professional course and event planning and management, registration, venue arrangements, advertising and marketing, registrant course materials and course evaluation.
  • The Office of Continuing Medical Education & Professional Development at the University of Calgary is fully accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Education (CACME) and is an accredited CPD provider for The College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
     
  • Offer expertise in needs assessment, instructional design, conceptual design, and curricular design and accreditation standards in the development of a program
  • Translate innovative ideas, programs, goals, objectives of a given program into logistics and arrangements
  • Identify risks and issues and bring them to the attention of the Primary CPD Provider Organization and/or SPC, as appropriate
  • Provide administrative support, such as meeting coordination, hosting arrangements, minutes
  • Work with CME&PD EC to set the agenda
  • Lead the SPC meetings
  • Ensure that the work of the SPC is meaningful for all members
  • Ensure the skills and experience of all members are used to their potential
  • Ensure that conflict, if it arises, is managed respectfully of all parties and in a timely manner
  • If consensus within SPC is not achievable, the Chair has the casting vote and/or recommends escalation of an issue to the Primary CPD Provider Organization
  • In collaboration with CME&PD:
    • Review any declared conflict of interest and advise on required mitigation. Bring to PC for consultation as required.
    • Annual review of the Scientific Planning Committee membership to ensure optimal representation and coverage of responsibilities


Recognition & Recruitment

Scientific Planning Committee members will be acknowledged on the CPD event website and/or in the brochure and the day-of communications.
