PDEL Testimonial - Laura Morrison
Laura Morrison
Degree and specialization: MSc, Medical Education
PDEL cohort year: 2020-2021
How was your experience in the PDEL program?
- I took a two-year hiatus from my orthopaedic surgery residency program to pursue a Master of Medical Education. As part of this opportunity, I was fortunate enough to enrol in the first iteration of the Professional Development and Experiential Learning Program.
What were the key things you learned in the PDEL program?
- The course was equally valuable in terms of didactic/interactive classroom work as well as the internship experience. I was exposed to concepts such as project management and strategic planning for the first time, which I otherwise wouldn’t have been exposed to in my surgical training. I have since been able to directly apply these skills in leadership roles within two provincial health organizations.
How has participating in PDEL program influenced your career thus far?
- During my internship I worked closely with several members executive leadership at Alberta Health Services. I especially enjoyed being exposed to the great number of passionate, kind and thoughtful leaders in the medical community. Being a part of difficult conversations has inspired me to speak up in a strategic manner in my current leadership roles.
