Dear Colleagues
We are happy to partner with you in patient care.
The Alberta Children’s Hospital is the largest provide for children with epilepsy in Alberta. We also provide diagnostic services such as EEG and longterm-EEG monitoring for Southern Alberta. For specialized treatment such as intracranial EEG, epilepsy surgery, laser therapy (LITT) and clinical trails, we are also able to accept out of province referrals.
You will find a comprehensive list of offered treatments and diagnostics below.
If you want to refer a patient to our program, from Alberta please use the Connect Care system and indicate that you are referring to Epilepsy Services: CGY ACH NEUROLOGY CL. For referrals from outside the province, please send a referral fax to 403-592-5104 indicating the reason for referral (surgical procedure/trial participation). We will then aim to triage your referral to one of our epileptologists.
Epilepsy Surgery Program
Our surgical program offers all presurgical diagnostics and surgical procedures that are available for children. We welcome patients that are sent to us for surgical evaluations and offer in-person and virtual appointments for these patients. Our neurosurgeon Dr Walter Hader has longstanding experience in all types of epilepsy surgery, as well as minimally invasive laser interventions and diagnostic stereo-EEG placements.
Treatments for Refractory Epilepsy
In our program, we aim to provide alternative treatments for children that continue to have seizures despite having tried the most common anti-seizure medications.
Many of our patient are not surgical candidates, because they have a genetic epilepsy or multifocal seizure onset. For these patients we offer a variety of alternative treatments.

First Seizure/At-Risk Clinic
One in 10 children experiences a seizure before their 18th birthday. Less than half of them develop epilepsy later. This does not change the fact that families are very stressed by seizures, feel anxious and need professional support to cope well with first seizures. Here you can find more information about our First Seizure/At-Risk Clinic, and our virtual training platform "Knowledge2Empower".
