Award Types and Amounts

The Thomas E. Feasby Fellowships and Studentships will be awarded to summer students, Masters students, PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, and clinical fellows.  The award amounts are shown in the table below.  Students and fellows are strongly encouraged to apply for other provincial and national awards. Those students who are successful in obtaining another award will be topped up with the amount shown on the table below. Any additional funds, including benefits are the responsibility of the program to which the fellow or student belongs.

** Funds are only available to 2020, and the duration of the award will be adjusted to fit this timeframe.

* For the Summer Student and Co-op Student Awards, those candidates who meet one of the following criteria are eligible to apply:

  • registered in an Alberta-based undergraduate degree program,
  • registered in an undergraduate degree program outside of Alberta, and desiring to engage in research during the summer at an Alberta institution,
  • registered in an M.D. program, and who may also hold an undergraduate or graduate degree,
  • exceptional high school students with records of participation in the healthcare system, and a clear interest in pursuing a health research career,
  • currently in the last term of their undergraduate degrees and who have applied either to Medical School or to a graduate program that would start in the coming Fall.

Funds Available

There will be no set number of awards given to each award type.  The total amount available is $172,000/year.

Application for Award

Criteria 

In order to be considered for the award, the student/fellow must fulfill the following criteria:

  1.  Work on a project that directly relates to the QuICR project 
  2. Have a supervisor/co-supervisor who is a QuICR grant member

The student/fellow’s proposed research project needs to relate to the QuICR project. This can be in any one (or more) of the following QuICR components: clinical and/or imaging registry; acute stroke quality improvement (Ischemic stroke and TIA/Minor stroke); and/or any of the clinical research projects. Additionally, the student/fellow must have a supervisor (or co-supervisor) who is a member of the QuICR grant.

There will be a call for applications once per year: January.  All applications should be submitted to quicr@ucalgary.ca.

Application components

All interested students and fellows will be asked to apply by submitting the following the Thomas E. Feasby Fellowship and Studentship application form.

The research proposal must be related to the overall QuICR project in one or more of the following areas: acute stroke registry (clinical and/or imaging), improving acute stroke services, TIA/minor stroke assessment, and/or one of the QuICR clinical research projects, evidence synthesis linked to the above, and/or the dissemination and translation of QuICR project findings.

Selection Process

Applicants will be graded based on the AIHS Pro-Grid (TM) tool.

Faculty that are members of the steering committee are assembled to review the applications. The committee from Calgary review the applications from Edmonton and vice versa. The entire review committee from both universities have a joint meeting to review the scores given by the reviewer and the application, and together make the final decision on who will receive the award.  Notices are sent to all applicants immediately after decisions have been made. The awards can commence 1 month after the decision has been made to allow for the distribution of funds. Each application will be judged based on the criteria below.

Summer or Co-op Students  

  1. Is the applicant of high academic merit with an interest in a career in clinical research or healthcare improvement?  
  2. Is there an appropriate level of engagement and/or commitment from the applicant? How has the applicant been engaged to-date? 
  3. Is the research proposal feasible within the time that the summer/co-op student will be with the program?  
  4. Does the research proposal bring forward an interesting aspect that fits within the QuICR project? Does the research proposal focus on a question of mutual interest to QuICR knowledge and/or end-users? 
  5. Is there a plan to disseminate and/or translate the findings arising from the research?

Masters Students  

  1. Does the applicant have excellent academic record from their undergraduate degree?  
  2. Does the applicant possess strong research potential?  
  3. Is there an appropriate level of engagement and/or commitment from the applicant? How has the applicant been engaged to-date? 
  4. Are the overall goals of the project well-defined and clear; with distinct outputs that support the QuICR Project? Does the research proposal focus on a question of mutual interest to QuICR knowledge and/or end-users? Is the research contextualized within the cumulate state of evidence in the area (or propose synthesis to this end?)  Does the research proposal focus on a question of mutual interest to QuICR knowledge- and /or end-users? 
  5. Is the proposed contribution(s) of the project well-defined, clear and significant with respect to advancing the overall goals of the QuICR project?  
  6. Are the approaches and methods appropriate to deliver the proposed output(s) and achieve the proposed contribution(s)? 
  7. Is there a plan to disseminate and/or translate the findings arising from the research?

PhD Students  

  1. Does the applicant possess strong research and leadership experience?  
  2. Does the applicant show potential to bring forward an emerging topic in clinical research or healthcare improvement related to acute stroke or TIA care?  
  3. Does the applicant show strong academic record?  
  4. Are the overall goals of the project well-defined and clear; with distinct outputs that support the QuICR Project? Does the research proposal focus on a question of mutual interest to QuICR knowledge and/or end-users? 
  5. Is the proposed contribution(s) of the project well-defined, clear and significant with respect to advancing the overall goals of the QuICR project? Is the research contextualized within the cumulate state of evidence in the area (or propose synthesis to this end?)  Does the research proposal focus on a question of mutual interest to QuICR knowledge- and /or end-users? 
  6. Are the approaches and methods appropriate to deliver the proposed output(s) and achieve the proposed contribution(s)? 
  7. Is there a plan to disseminate and/or translate the findings arising from the research?

Post-doctoral Fellows and Clinical Fellows

  1. Does the applicant demonstrate the ability to lead research independently?  
  2. Does the applicant(s) bring the appropriate expertise and experience to lead and deliver the proposed outputs and achieve the proposed contribution(s)?  
  3. Does the applicant have strong leadership skills?  
  4. Are the overall goals of the project well-defined and clear; with distinct outputs that support the QuICR Project? Does the research proposal focus on a question of mutual interest to QuICR knowledge and/or end-users? 
  5. Is the proposed contribution(s) of the project well-defined, clear and significant with respect to advancing the overall goals of the QuICR project? Is the research contextualized within the cumulate state of evidence in the area (or propose synthesis to this end?)  Does the research proposal focus on a question of mutual interest to QuICR knowledge- and /or end-users? 
  6. Are the approaches and methods appropriate to deliver the proposed output(s) and achieve the proposed contribution(s)? 
  7. Is there a plan to disseminate and/or translate the findings arising from the research?
