Cumming School of Medicine and Alberta Health Services Institutes and Centres

Institutes are a joint venture of and partnership between the Cumming School of Medicine and Alberta Health Services - Calgary Zone that support and fulfill the vision and mission of the Cumming School of Medicine and Alberta Health Services.

Institutes encompass activities in all three areas of education, research and service to society and serve as the umbrella organization for research groups, ensuring high quality research programs span the continuum of bench to bedside. Institutes also contribute to the enhanced delivery of healthcare in a setting of inquiry and education, including the development of networks of care for Alberta Health Services - Calgary Zone and southern Alberta.

Currently there are seven Institutes identified. Institute directors are appointed jointly by the dean of the Cumming School of Medicine and the president and CEO of Alberta Health Services.

Policy Statement on Institute Membership

February 2004

  1. Institute membership is the individual choice of faculty members - nobody MUST be a member but opting out has a significant opportunity cost.
  2. It is agreed that all faculty members who meet minimal requirements should be encouraged to join an Institute: the tents are large but membership is not guaranteed.
  3. Institute membership does not imply that an individual will be part of a specific Institute program: programs and priorities are set by the Institutes.
  4. An individual can only be a primary member of one Institute. This restriction is primarily for space planning. It is possible to be a secondary member of several Institutes.
  5. The same rules will apply to members from the Alberta Health Services who are not faculty members (if such exist) and to members from other faculties or universities.

Policy Statement on Dual Institute Membership

April 2015

The Cumming School of medicine encourages full membership in two institutes if it is to the clear benefit of a faculty member, as this may help with cross fertilization between research areas.  Only in the most exceptional circumstances would we allow full membership in three or more Institutes.

If you believe that dual full membership is important to you, the approval procedure is as follows:

  1. You should first discuss plans with your primary department head.
  2. You or your department head then need to discuss your wishes with the director of your current institute and the institute which you wish to join as a dual member.
  3. You then must obtain a written letter of support of your Department Head indicating that dual membership is in your interest and in that of the Cumming School of Medicine.  You also require a support letter of the Director of the Institute for which additional membership is being sought.  The latter must outline any implications for laboratory/research space, and any specific expectations.  There is no expectation that additional research space will be made available to you.
  4. A formal request for dual full membership - with the above documentation and a brief justification – must be sent to the Senior Associate Dean Research for approval. It is preferred that this be provided electronically.
