General Neurology Program

The General Neurology Program involves many of the members of the Section of Neurology. Currently, 26 neurologists provide outpatient clinical services at each of the four adult hospital sites.

Highlights

Over the past several years the General Neurology Program has implemented many innovations in care delivery and system processes. Our Neurology Central Access and Triage (NCAT) has expanded to involve all specialties within neurology (with the exception of Stroke and Urgent Neurology) to simplify the referral process for referring practitioners.  Over 500 referrals a month are received, triaged and processed each month.

Additionally, the General Neurology Program provides over 120 telephone consults per month via Specialist Link and over 40 electronic consults per quarter via eReferral.  These services allow for timely access to neurological consultation for referring physicians.

Over the last few years, the wait to see a General Neurologist in Calgary has grown significantly to over one year.  Urgent assessment, however, is still available through the Urgent Neurology Program and the Stroke Prevention Clinic.  As a result, the Division of Neurology has partnered with Primary Care Networks to understand the needs of referring physicians and patients to explore new ways to improve access.  Some examples include; increasing multidisciplinary services and developing more than 5 clinical pathways of common neurological problems to guide primary care physicians in patient care.
