MDGI / IM / MID Program Specific Awards
Subject to availability of departmental scholarship funding received yearly from the Faculty of Graduate Studies, MSc and PhD students shall be eligible for the following funding opportunities provided they are meeting program requirements in a timely manner.
Students may also be eligible for awards offered by the following:
Graduate Science Education Office
Supervisor's Research Institute - please check with your Research Institute for available funding opportunities
Students must be meeting program requirements on time in order to receive their payment.
- MSc Students - $2000 in Year 1
- PhD Students - $2500 for Year 1 and Year 2
- MSc to PhD Transfer Students - These students will receive the Year 2 PhD payment once their transfer is complete.
Travel Awards
Subject to available funding
Travel Awards are announced throughout the year by the Graduate Program Administrator. Check your ucalgary.ca email address often for these announcements.
To submit an application, fill in the Travel Award Form and attach your abstract. Email applications to gigrad@ucalgary.ca.
Thesis Awards
Available to both MSc and PhD students who receive unanimous recommendations from their examining committee for this award.
The award will be paid out to eligible students immediately following the exam.
Henry Koopmans Memorial Entrance Scholarship
This award is available to students entering either the MSc or PhD graduate program each year.
Eligibility criteria:
- Students who entered either the MSc or PhD graduate program on of after January 1, 2024.
- Project must be related to a defined aspect of nutrition, metabolism or inflammation in the GI tract or liver.
- Preference will be given to students enrolled in the MDGI program, but awards are available to students registered in any graduate program at the University of Calgary.
- Students are eligible for one award only during their graduate studies.
- Supervisor will normally be a Full or Associate member of the GIRG, but can be a member of any research group or faculty as long as the project is clearly related to Digestive Health & Disease.

Dr. Joseph Davison Travel Award
Only Eligible for Gastrointestinal Sciences Students
Eligibility:
- Current PhD or MSc student in the Gastrointestinal Sciences Graduate Program
- Presenting original research at a conference or workshop relevant to the student’s program. The award will not support travel for attendance at regular annual meetings (e.g. Digestive Disease Week (DDW) or Canadian Digestive Diseases Week (CDDW) conferences). Please check with the Program Administrator or Program Director to confirm whether the conference you are attending is eligible.
- All program requirements must be met at the time of application (annual progress reports, annual seminar presentation, annual supervisory committee meeting with minutes submitted, submission of research proposal if appropriate)
