This is a 12 week aerobic exercise program for adults suffering with persistent symptoms following concussion. This is a personalized, progressive aerobic exercise intervention for the treatment of persistent symptoms following concussion.

  • WHO: Individuals who have sustained a concussion/mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) diagnosed by a health professional three months to five years ago with persistent symptoms since the injury.
  • WHERE: Study visits are held at the Foothills Medical Centre and Alberta Children's Hospital. There are follow up visits every 3 weeks. Parking costs will be covered.
  • WHAT: Initial assessment will include a treadmill test, questionnaires, a blood draw and an MRI scan. Individuals enrolled in the study will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: one group will start immediately with the 12 week aerobic exercise program, the other group will start with a 6 week stretching program, following by the 12 week aerobic exercise program. The prescribed aerobic exercise is based on heart rate and will be at an intensity where symptoms are not worsened. Aerobic exercise has been shown to improve cognition, headache, sleep and mood, many of which are concussion-related symptoms. This study is evaluating the use of a personalized exercise program for the treatment of persistent post-concussion symptoms.
