2016 United Way Campaign a huge success

Thank you to everyone who participated in our 2016 United Way Campaign. It’s because of you – our faculty, staff and students – that the Cumming School of Medicine was able to raise an incredible $248,240.38 for the families, children and individuals in our community who need support!

“I’m completely blown away by the results,” says Dr. Ron Bridges, Senior Associate Dean, Faculty Affairs. “I’d like to acknowledge the hard work of our steering committee and volunteers, and the generosity of our community-focused faculty, staff and students. This contribution will make a tremendous difference in the lives of people right here in our community.”

We aimed high for our 2016 campaign, and successfully exceeded every one of our goals. This wouldn’t have been possible without the generous gift of Dr. Chen Fong. Not only did Dr. Fong make a $100,000 donation, but he also provided a gift of $50,000 that was used to match leader donations. Our results earned the Cumming School two awards at the Wrap-Up Celebration – one for the most money raised through special events, and one for the highest number of leader donors (gifts at or above the $1,200 mark).

There are also two departments that should be commended. Again this year, the Cumming School has awarded two $2,500 student scholarships – one to the clinical or basic science department that achieves the highest participation rate, and one to the department that has the highest amount of donations. This year’s winners are:

Participation – Medical Genetics with a participation rate of 24.1 per cent
Highest donations – Clinical Neurosciences with $11,178

“I’m so proud of our faculty. On behalf of the school, thank you to everyone who donated and to each of the approximately 170 volunteers who helped us surpass our fundraising goals,” says Guy Levy, Executive Director, Cumming School of Medicine. “We set a new record with our 2016 campaign, and I look forward to seeing what we’re able to achieve in 2017."
