How to Apply (Clinicians)
Please Note
As of October 19, 2021, all applicants who require an IELTS exam to meet the English Language Requirements for the University of Calgary, must provide valid exam(s) results at the time of application to our program in ordered to be considered for a position; with the exception of externally funded individuals. In addition, the test results must be valid at the time the College of Physicians and Surgeons receive them. Sometimes this results in having to rewrite the test to have test results that are valid at both the time of the interview and at the time CPSA opens your file for membership.
PGME at the University of Calgary will accept a single test result from any of the three English Language Proficiency Tests as recommended by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
The tests that are accepted to satisfy the requirement for ELP are the following:
- IELTS Academic Test – the test must be completed within 24 months prior to submitting their application to CPSA and must achieve of minimum score of 7.0 in each of the four components in a single test.
- OET Medicine Test (Occupational English Test) – completed within the 24 months before submitting their application to CPSA achieving a minimum grade of B in each component in a single test.
- CELPIP General Examination – completed within the 24 months before submitting their application to CPSA, achieving a minimum score of 9 in each component in a single test.
Please note: PGME will no longer accept more than one test result for any of the accepted tests to satisfy the ELP requirement.
Please see the Training Options Handbook for more information.
Deadlines and Start Dates
Applications are accepted all year round, with start dates staggered throughout the year to meet the scheduling needs of the program. An exception to this is fellows with external funding, who, having their funding source approved by PGME, may start their fellowship at their own convenience. Please note that we are currently receiving applications for positions starting in January 2026 and beyond.
External Funding
Due to the limited number of funded positions, fellows are encouraged to apply for external funding through the organizations below. Fellows with their own funding will have a reduced clinical load allowing them time to complete research work as required by their external award. In addition, fellows with external funding can choose their preferred start date. Click the logos for further information.
Process
Currently our program has four to six funded positions available each year. The competition for these positions is great given that we receive approximately 40 applications per year. Refer to the Fellowship Training Options guidebook below for more information on the process to apply.
After reading through the Fellowship Training Options guidebook, applicants should complete the application form and send it to the program administrator below with an up-to-date copy of your CV and ELP test results if applicable. Three letters of reference are required and must be sent directly to the program administrator before your application will be reviewed by the application committee.
Completed applications, CVs, ELP test results and reference letters are to be sent to:
