Research Training
Graduate Students
are registered through the Biomedical Engineering or Medical Sciences graduate programs at the University of Calgary. In special cases, appropriate students are registered in the Neurosciences graduate program. Students are strongly encouraged to take the Medical Imaging Graduate Specialization offered by these graduate programs.
Post-Doctoral Fellows
are registered through the Post-doctoral Office and are members of the Department of Radiology. They lead multi-faceted research projects intended to gradually establish them as investigators. Typically as part of their training, fellows take on responsibility for supervising undergraduate and junior graduate students.
Undergraduate Students
are typically registered in an engineering or science degree program; special consideration is given to Canadian students from universities other than the University of Calgary. Honors thesis and project students from Biological Sciences (Biochemistry), Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Health Sciences, Neurosciences and Physics have completed their work in the Vascular Imaging Laboratory.
Visiting Students, Post-Doctoral Fellows, and Staff
are often from institutions located outside of Calgary. While enrolled or working at their home institution, they spend some times completing important research studies with us.
Key Advantages of VIL Research Training Efforts
We seek to produce trainees with advanced skills in imaging and data science, physics, and engineering, as well as scientific communication. Experience at the VIL has demonstrated that these skills are in high demand across Canada. Notably, we make deliberate effort to ensure equity and inclusivity as we strive to overcome barriers and maintain a diverse group of research trainees.
Medical Imaging Graduate Specialization
Graduate students in the Vascular Imaging Laboratory commonly enroll in the Medical Imaging Specialization. This specialization, available to both MSc and PhD students, prepares graduate students for both academic and industrial careers in medical imaging. It is offered through graduate programs in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Medical Sciences, Neuroscience, Psychology, and Physics and Astronomy.
Energize: the Campaign for Eyes High
The Eyes High Postdoctoral Match-Funding Program is designed to support University of Calgary faculty to recruit and support outstanding postdoctoral scholars.
HBI Realise Program
Most trainees also participate in the Hotchkiss Brain Institute's REALISE program that provides additional training opportunities and soft skills to students and fellows working in neurovascular and brain imaging.
Seaman Family MR Research Centre
Our trainees work at the Seaman Family MR Research Centre, which has a 25 year
history of providing a rich environment for multidisciplinary imaging science training. About forty individuals work in this collaborative and supportive environment, where diversity in thought, approaches, and actions is encouraged.
