Critical Care
There are 5 adult intensive care units in Calgary that are run by the Department of Critical Care and they provide care for patients with multi-system problems, neurological and trauma related injuries, and who are recovering from cardiac surgery. All the units are "closed" and thus exclusively run by specialist critical care doctors. There is close collaboration in patient care among anesthesiologists and critical care doctors not only for management of surgical patients who must be cared for both in the operating room and the intensive care unit, but also for critically ill patients with significant injuries requiring the expertise of an anesthesiologist for advanced pain management.
