Canadian Electives

The University of Calgary’s Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) Office welcomes trainees from RCPSC- and CFPC-accredited programs across Canada to complete clinical electives in our residency programs. These electives provide an opportunity for visiting trainees to gain supervised clinical experience while ensuring compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements. 

Application Process: 
• Trainees must apply at least 4 months before the elective start date. 
• Required documents include: 
   o Home Program Support Letter confirming approval, elective dates, and salary coverage. 
   o Local Program Support Letter from the University of Calgary Program Director.
   o Verification of Work Permit status (if applicable). 

Credentialing and Registration: 
• Trainees must be licensed by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). 
• Liability coverage must be provided by the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA). 
• Alberta Health Services Medical Education Office (AHS-MEO) credentialing is required before the elective start date.
