Competency Based Medical Education Overview

Competency based medical education (CBME) is a restructuring of medical education from a time-based framework of learning to one of competence. In CBME, competence is defined as the mastery of certain skills or abilities (outcomes) and the curriculum is organized around the achievement of these competencies.  As such, residents must demonstrate that they have mastered the necessary tasks and met the explicit outcomes required of them at any given phase of their training before moving onto the next phase.
