Newly Admitted

Trainees accepted into a residency program at the University of Calgary for the upcoming academic year will be onboarded during the registration period in March, as some required documentation is time sensitive.

Prior to registration, incoming residents are strongly encouraged to review the information on this page related to their upcoming training, as well as the registration webpage.

Our office has also developed the following range of resources and events to support incoming residents during their transition into residency.

The Nest is a central repository for information and updates in one accessible location, ensuring trainees remain informed and prepared while reducing inbox congestion.

Site Features:

  • Orientation Hub: Onboarding checklists and essential documents (Available Now).
  • Program News: Real-time updates and departmental announcements.
  • Volunteer Calls: Leadership and community engagement opportunities.
  • Notices & Reminders: Centralized deadlines to keep inboxes clear.

All residents are required to access and review the essential and recommended resource pages available on the Nest (see above), which will cover a variety of information, including learner supports, information on financial matters,, accommodations, an introduction to the Professional Organization of Resident Physicians of Alberta (PARA), and the Office of Resident Affairs and Physician Wellness.   Residents are encouraged to visit these pages regularly for updates.

PPE SIM Training sessions will be provided in the latter half of June. Sign-up dates and information for the sessions will be available on the Hub. the Nest.

As PPE SIM training is a program requirement, trainees should consult their program administrator to determine if they need to complete PPE SIM training prior to starting their residency program.

The in-person PGME orientation is held in the last part of June for incoming trainees. The format of the orientation has been designed as a mini conference, giving trainees the opportunity to connect with fellow trainees and attend sessions aimed at facilitating the transition into residency training.  AHS badge pickup will be available during the orientation, along with a variety of vendors.

The in-person orientation is mandatory for all incoming R-1 trainees who have not attended a UC in-person orientation previously. Subspecialty trainees and trainees arriving from outside of Canada are strongly encouraged to attend, if previous clinical commitments or work permit status allow.

More detailed information, including the schedule, and maps will be available on the Nest.
