Tuition

All Residents and Fellows enrolled in Postgraduate Medical Education are assessed tuition and fees for the duration of their registration in a training program. Tuition and fees support the delivery of postgraduate medical education and the services provided by the Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) Office, including resident registration and records management, accreditation support, learner services, and institutional oversight.

Tuition rates are set annually by the University of Calgary and may vary based on residency status (e.g., domestic or international). Residents and Fellows are responsible for ensuring their tuition is paid by the published deadlines.

Tuition is assessed in two installments each academic year:

  • Fall Term (July–December) — due in September
  • Winter Term (January–June) — due in January

Information on payment methods is available on the University of Calgary website. It is important for a trainee to check their My UCalgary Student portal for payment confirmations and detailed breakdown of fees.

Tuition assessments are based on active registration in a training program and are adjusted only in the following circumstances:

  • When a Resident or Fellow is on an approved leave for six (6) consecutive months or longer
  • When a Resident or Fellow starts training off-cycle
  • When a Resident or Fellow ends training earlier than the anticipated completion date

For off-cycle starts and early completion of training, tuition is prorated based on registration. Tuition is assessed for any month in which the Resident or Fellow is registered for 15 days or more.

An annual PGME Administrative/Registration Fee is assessed for each academic year in which a Resident is considered active in their training program. Fellows are required to pay this fee once during the duration of their training.

The administrative fee is directly aligned with tuition assessment:

  • If tuition is assessed for any portion of the academic year, the administrative fee will also be assessed.
  • If no tuition is assessed for the full academic year, the administrative fee will not apply.

The fee is collected through the PGME registration web application (instructions for this are listed here). Payment is required in order to complete the annual registration process. Delays in payment may impact timely registration and continuation of practice.

PGME Residents and Fellows are eligible to participate in the UPass program based on their registration status with the University.

Eligibility, enrolment instructions, and important deadlines are managed centrally by the University. Trainees are encouraged to review the UPass website for full details on participation requirements and timelines.
