Competence Committee

Competence Committee

The competence committee is one of the central pillars of Competence by Design (CBD) as it allows for the review of resident progress and promotion in a way that is routine, systematic and straightforward. Through the review of the aggregated assessments, feedback, and other relevant data, mostly present within the electronic assessment platform (e-portfolio for the U of C) the committee is able to discuss, make decisions around and recommendations about resident promotion and progress through an “informed group decision-making process” 1.  In moving decisions about resident promotion away from individuals directly involved in teaching and observing residents, “…interactions between individual residents and observers can focus on coaching feedback to help improve residents’ performance (i.e. assessment for learning). 2

Furthermore, the comprehensive and regular review of resident progress should allow for learners in difficulty to be identified earlier and corrective action to be taken or additional support given before a formal remediation is needed.
