International Electives
The University of Calgary’s Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) Office welcomes international trainees from accredited residency programs to complete clinical electives in our training programs. These electives provide an opportunity for visiting trainees to gain supervised clinical experience while ensuring compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements.
Application Process:
• Trainees must apply at least 8 months before the elective start date.
• Required documents include:
o Complete CV.
o Copy of passport.
o Home Program Support Letter confirming approval, elective dates, and salary coverage.
Credentialing and Registration:
• Trainees must apply for a work permit and travel visa (if applicable).
• Licensing is required through the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).
• Liability coverage must be provided by the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA).
• Alberta Health Services Medical Education Office (AHS-MEO) credentialing must be completed before the elective start date.
