To improve the mental health of children, adolescents and their families through education, research and treatment of mental disorders.
Overview
The division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry will provide training to all levels of students in the recognition and evidenced-based treatment of mental disorders in children and adolescents. It seeks to promote research and to improve the knowledge, skills and attitudes of health care providers about mental disorders in children and adolescents.
We are committed to an open and supportive learning environment. We seek to integrate research findings from epidemiology and clinical research into education and clinical practice.
Education
- Provide opportunities for increasing knowledge, skills and health-promoting attitudes
- Promote critical review of the treatment of mental disorders in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
- Identify and communicate best practice patterns for the treatment of mental disorders in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
- Foster advanced training and sub-specialization of a greater number of psychiatrists and allied professionals in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
- Promote undergraduate teaching, lectures, seminars and electives in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
- Promote the residency rotation in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry as core training for all psychiatrists
- Actively solicit input on continued professional development (CPD) and offer monthly rounds
- Division faculty are involved in the core curriculum as well as provision of elective rotations and fellowships to trainees from the University of Calgary, the University of Alberta and international fellows.
Clinical Services
- Promote a coordinated and standardized level of care in AHS, Calgary Zone
- Promote an integrated, comprehensive and responsive treatment of the mental health and social care needs in the community and in collaboration with Primary care Physicians, our community NGO’s partners, with Education, child welfare and justice.
- Advocate for the mental health needs of children and adolescents
- Promote the development of specialty clinics in tertiary care centers
- Support the continuum of care from prevention to acute care
- Integrate clinical services with teaching and research practices
Research
- Generate new knowledge in Child, Adolescent and Family Psychiatry and integrate this with the current treatment of mental disorders in children and adolescents
- Promote communication and collaboration with other interested researchers both locally and nationally
- Foster successful research grant applications and publications in Child, Adolescent and Family Psychiatry
