To improve the mental health of adults through education, research, and treatment of mental disorders.

Inpatient

Overview

The Division of Inpatient Psychiatry will promote excellence in clinical practice, education and research amongst its members.  It will provide training to students and residents involved in providing psychiatric care in the assessment and treatment of mental disorders.  The division will seek to improve the knowledge, skills and attitudes of health care providers about mental disorders.

  • Create an environment that facilitates education and continuing professional development
  • Support research by providing review and clinical support to research proposals and offering opportunities for residents to be included
  • Support clinical services across the four adult acute care sites and across the continuum of care from acute care to primary care and prevention

Education

  • Improve the knowledge, skills and attitudes of other professionals and health disciplines regarding mental illness
  • Promote the principles of evidence-based practice and critical review of the treatment of mental disorders
  • Identify and communicate best-practice patterns for the treatment of mental disorder in adults (ages 18 - 65)
  • Create an environment that facilitates education and continuing professional development.
  • Division faculty are involved in the core curriculum as well as provision of elective rotations and fellowships to trainees from the University of Calgary, the University of Alberta and international fellows.

Clinical Services

  • Promote a coordinated and standardized level of care in the Calgary Zone
  • Advocate for the mental health needs of adults
  • Integrate clinical services with teaching and research practices

Research

  • Generate new knowledge in the treatment of adult mental health disorders
  • Promote communication and collaboration with other interested researchers
  • Test the effectiveness of innovative treatment approaches on the adult inpatient units, with ongoing appropriate evaluation
  • Providing clinical support for research proposals
  • Offering opportunities for residents to participate in research
  • Fostering research links with other departments, faculties and institutions
  • Support clinical services across the adult acute-care sites and across the continuum of care from acute care to primary care and prevention
