Message from the Department Head
Welcome to our new website!
Mental illness impacts people of all ages, education background, income levels, and cultures. In any given year, 1 in 5 people in Canada will personally experience a mental health problem or illness. This means that everyone around us is indirectly or directly impacted by mental illness. In the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Calgary we recognize the burden mental illness places on our friends, colleagues, and community.
We have a vibrant Department that focuses on academic excellence, working with our community partners to better be able to provide the right care at the right place. We are committed to continuing innovative research that is internationally recognized to try to improve care and to ensuring the next generation of health care providers receives the best training.
I am grateful to be working with an institute that prizes collaboration, innovation and integration. The Department of Psychiatry works with all other areas of medicine to provide a vibrant home to scientists and educators. We are all working to improve the functioning of those in our community.

Resident Corner
The best part of this program in my view is the residents themselves. I feel their passion come through in how everyone actively contributes to the residency body, wanting to make it the best 5+ years possible. There is a lovely sentiment that exists of contribution, community, and belonging.
