Fellowship
Clinical fellowships provide physicians with advanced clinical training and opportunities to develop specialized expertise beyond what is typically acquired during residency training. Fellows must be recognized specialists or family physicians and generally complete one to two years of additional training focused on a specific area of practice.
Fellowship training does not lead to certification by the College of Family Physicians of Canada, Collège des médecins du Québec, or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). Completion of a clinical fellowship alone is not a pathway to permanent practice for specialist or family physicians in Alberta.
Application requirements differ depending on the fellowship category. Explore the eligibility requirements and application process for Domestic Fellows, International Medical Graduate (IMG) Fellows, and Sponsored Fellows below.
For questions about fellowship programs, including eligibility and the application process, please contact the program directly. View the Fellowship Programs Directory here.
Clinical Fellows are required to have an approved funding source for the duration of their fellowship. Approved Fee-for-Service arrangements included in the Fellowship Framework may also be accepted.
Are you passionate about teaching, mentorship, curriculum development, or medical education research? The Centre for Research and Innovation in Health Sciences Education (RIHSE), in collaboration with Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME), is launching a new Clinician Educator Fellowship Program beginning July 1, 2027.
