Miles Hunter

Dr. Miles Hunter

After completing his FRCPC Emergency Medicine at the University of Calgary in 2022, Dr. Miles Hunter works clinically at Foothills Medical Centre and Peter Lougheed Centre Emergency Departments. With an area of focused interest and CASEM Diploma in Sport Medicine, Dr. Hunter also works at Innovative Sport Medicine clinic, aiming to build positive connections between our local emergency departments and the sport medicine community. Dr. Hunter carries additional clinical interests in evolving resuscitation strategies and residency education.

In his role as Chair of the Hiring Committee, Dr. Hunter is passionate about refining a transparent, equitable and sustainable hiring framework that continues to seek engaged and clinically excellent physicians with a diverse skill set to serve our growing Calgary community.

When not working, Dr. Hunter enjoys playing hockey and baseball in local Calgary leagues. He also enjoys skiing, mountain biking and finding a sunny patio with his wife, family, and friends.

Academic Head, Department of Emergency Medicine, Cumming School of Medicine
Alberta Health Services and the University of Calgary invite applications for the joint position of Head, Department of Emergency Medicine, Cumming School of Medicine, and Calgary Zone Clinical Department Head, Emergency Medicine, Alberta Health Services. These are key leadership positions within Alberta Health Services (AHS) and the Cumming School of Medicine (CSM). The successful candidate will be offered a Contingent Term appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level.


Qualifications include an MD, eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta, and certification in Emergency Medicine. The selected candidate must have a strong academic background with academic qualifications commensurate with a Contingent Term appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level as well as proven leadership, administrative and interpersonal skills, and a strong academic and health service delivery background with demonstrated clinical, research and educational achievements.


The Department of Emergency Medicine has 224 primary physician members and over 279 academic members. The Department is a leader in the continuous development and innovation of system-wide emergency medicine clinical services. The Calgary Department of Emergency Medicine encompasses three emergency medicine residency programs and four hospital sites seeing over 300,000 patients per year. In addition to a full spectrum of high acuity clinical medicine, trauma and cardiac care, we have active programs in human patient simulation and EM ultrasound, and Calgary is the home of STARS (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society), one of North America’s longest operating rotary wing aero medical systems.
The Department of Emergency Medicine is a major department within the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. The Department fully contributes to the research, educational and service missions of the Cumming School of Medicine. The AHS Zone Clinical Department Head (ZCDH), Emergency Medicine will lead and participate in the development of system-wide clinical services for a large and diverse population that incorporates urban Calgary and surrounding suburban and rural communities.

Emergency Department Deputy Head - Education (Physician Development and Continuing Medical Education) 0.2FTE (one day per week)

The Department of Emergency Medicine, in partnership with the University of Calgary, invites applications for the position of Emergency Department Deputy Head - Education effective February 1, 2024. Funding for this position comes from the generous support of our (PSF) Physician Support Fund, and the (PGME) Postgraduate Medical Education office at the University of Calgary Cumming School Of Medicine. PSF provides $15,000 annually and the PGME provides matching funds of $15,000. The department also provides a top up from our University of Calgary fund.

Deputy Head - Education. Cumming School of Medicine. University of Calgary. 

The preferred candidate for this role will be a successful emergency physician already working in Calgary who has established credibility within the group, and has a demonstrated track record of leadership, administrative, and scholarly activity, as well as an understanding of the educational milieu and current educational issues within the Department, the Faculty of Medicine, and in Canada.

The Emergency Department Deputy Head - Education will be tasked with organizing and recruiting speakers for weekly Emergency Department Grand Rounds as well as facilitate mentorship and coaching relationships between department members with shared interests, and varying degrees of expertise. The Deputy Head - Education will act as a resource to faculty members in fostering academic and educational career growth in Emergency Medicine. They will actively participate in a full range of educational activities in the department (UG, PGME, CME, etc.) The time commitment for this role is .2FTE (one day per week).
