Job Opportunities in Emergency Medicine
The Calgary Department of Emergency Medicine 2024 Hiring Cycle has closed
Below are some common FAQ for our annual hiring cycle for the Calgary Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM). Please check back in Spring 2025 for further details regarding the 2025 hiring cycle. General timelines and requirements are unlikely to change significantly.
The Calgary DEM welcomes FRCPC and CCFP(EM) residency-trained and certified emergency physicians to apply to our hiring cycle that runs from August to October on an annual basis with a start date of July 1st the following year. In some cases, earlier start dates may be considered depending on individual circumstances.
FRCPC residents anticipating graduation from their residency program by the July start date OR practicing FRCPC or CCFP(EM) residency-trained and certified physicians with at least 1-year of emergency department work experience are eligible to apply to the Associate Hiring Cycle. The Associate Hiring cycle is intended to fill permanent positions in the Calgary DEM. Successful candidates from the Associate Hiring Cycle become permanent members of the group after completing a 1-year probationary period, known as an ‘Associate Year’.
Note: CCFP(EM) enhanced skills year resident trainees, as well as CCFP(EM) residency-trained and certified physicians with less than 1 year of emergency department work experience are eligible to apply for a 1-year Locum, which will allow for eligibility in the following year’s Associate Hiring Cycle. For more information on this, please see ‘Does Calgary hire Locum physicians?’ below.

Calgary DEM conducts interviews in a hybrid fashion; both in-person and online interview options are available to candidates. When invited for an interview, you will be asked for your preferred interview method.
Interviewers include a panel of Calgary DEM physicians in leadership roles (Department Head, Deputy Department Head and Site Leads), Nursing Leadership, as well as a mix of Calgary DEM physicians across all four major adult hospitals.
The Calgary DEM strives to ensure its physician group is representative of the community it serves. If you feel that your background, training, interests or experiences might be under-represented in Calgary, please share these details with us in your letter of interest and how you may provide growth to our community.
After accepting a job offer, communication will be made with all successful applicants for their preferred hospital site(s): Foothills Medical Centre, Peter Lougheed Centre, Rockyview General Hospital and South Health Campus. Applicants will be able to submit first, second and third choice preferences. Split lines shared between multiple sites are also acceptable.
Initial site assignments are balanced between site needs and preferences of the applicants.
After completing the Associate Year, physicians can re-submit their preferred sites, which are then included for consideration of transfer when available.
Yes. 1-year Locum physician opportunities are offered on an annual basis for a July 1st start date. In some cases, earlier start dates may be considered depending on individual circumstances.
CCFP(EM) enhanced skills year resident trainees, as well as CCFP(EM) residency-trained and certified physicians with less than 1 year of emergency department work experience are eligible to apply for a 1-year Locum, which will allow for eligibility in the following year’s Associate Hiring Cycle.
Running in a parallel timeline with the Associate Hiring Cycle, the Locum Hiring Cycle also provides an opportunity for emergency physicians interested in Calgary the chance to experience work in the zone without the need for a long-term commitment.
The Locum Hiring Cycle timeline of dates and submission requirements are the same as the Associate Hiring Cycle listed above. Please indicate your application is for the Locum Hiring Cycle when submitting by email to Scott Banks and Lilian Prudencio.
Note: By Medical Affairs policy, Locums cannot be extended beyond 1 year. If a Locum hire is interested in long-term employment in the Calgary DEM, they must apply to the Associate Hiring Cycle during their Locum year.
The Calgary DEM Hiring Lead is Dr. Miles Hunter (mmhunter@ucalgary.ca). Feel free to reach out to him at any time with questions or for more information.
