EM Ultrasound Residency Rotations

Overview

Emergency Medicine residents at our department enjoy the opportunity to receive training on Point-of-Care ultrasound as part of their curriculum, thus greatly enhancing their skills to successfully work in the current emergency medicine environment. Specifically, our residents have the following training sessions:

EDE I course (Emergency Department Echo)

All junior residents will complete the EDE I course in their first year. The EDE I course will be offered within the first two months of residency. This course is held locally and is the initial step in becoming an Independent Practitioner of emergency department ultrasound (IP certified).

Junior Emergency Ultrasound Block

The junior ultrasound block is the first scheduled emergency medicine block after completion of the EDE I course. This block is designed to assist the junior residents in becoming IP certified during their first year of residency. Preceptors are asked to supervise 2-3 EDE scans per shift. The goal is to achieve 50 aorta, FAST, cardiac and early obstetrical scans over the course of the block.

Senior Ultrasound Curriculum

The goal of the senior ultrasound curriculum is to teach several common advanced applications of point-of-care ultrasound in the emergency department. These will include; advanced cardiac views, gallbladder, pleural and lung ultrasound, volume assessment, regional anesthesia and deep venous thrombosis. These sessions will be held bi-monthly on academic days.
