Medical Toxicology:
This is 4-week rotation with organized and scheduled small group teaching of a broad range of toxicology topics (10-13 sessions), listening to our information specialists manage calls and consult with the medical toxicologist, along with bedside consults of unwell, interesting and/or symptomatic overdose and exposure patients at Foothills Medical Centre (and other sites if appropriate). There is an expectation of light home call listening to calls overnight and occasionally seeing a consult at bedside; and one 15-minute focused presentation on a topic of your choice. There is plenty of time for independent learning and taking a deep dive into niche toxicology subjects.
Learners can expect to learn about topics including decontamination and dialysis, acetaminophen, salicylates, antidepressants, antipsychotics, antiepileptics, antidiabetics, iron, caustics, cardiac drugs, carbon monoxide, cyanide, hydrogen sulfide, toxic alcohols, substance withdrawal and drugs of abuse.
This rotation is available to both medical students and residents from any specialty.
This is available in 2- or 4- week blocks, though the teaching sessions are scheduled on a 4-week basis matching the PGME block schedule.

Note: Medical students apply through the AFMC portal.
Clinical Pharmacology:
This rotation is aimed at providing medical residents with a comprehensive experience in Clinical Pharmacology (CP) through exposure to core CP principles and their clinical applications. During this rotation, residents will spend their time doing a mix of CP consult service, self-directed learning, outpatient clinics, and case-based question and review sessions with CP staff. See the CP consult service tab above for details on the consult service.
Residents are expected to complete 5 cases of case-based learning per week to review with staff, covering a broad range of core CP topics including: Pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, pharmacogenomics, drug-drug interactions, adverse drug events, severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCARs), drug-induced organ injury, and polypharmacy/deprescribing. Residents are also expected to complete one CPT pearl of the week on a topic of their choosing. Examples of prior CPT pearls can be found here. There is plenty of time for independent learning. Our service runs M-F 0800-1700 excluding holidays, and there are no overnight or weekend on call responsibilities.
This rotation is available to residents from any specialty and for either 2- or 4- week blocks. Teaching sessions are scheduled weekly, and teaching days may vary depending on resident and staff availability.
