Our Work
In our mission to promote global citizenship, we encourage and support faculty and residents working on local, national, and international projects that support vulnerable populations. Below are some of our members' activities.
Peru & Vietnam
Project Outreach International Child Health Organization is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1993 by physicians from the Alberta Children’s Hospital, Dr. Ruth Connors and Dr. Roger Galbraith. The organization is founded on the belief that all children, wherever they live, have the right to basic medical care that will allow them to lead healthy, happy, and productive lives. Each mission includes a team made up of surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and allied health – all from the Alberta Children’s Hospital.
Partnering with local charities, missions over the past 10 years have been organized to treat children with cleft lip and palate, hypospadias, or burn scar contractures limiting function. Our surgeons have travelled on missions to various towns in Peru, including Callao, Chancay, Chiclayo, Iquitos, and Cusco. Our surgeons have also travelled to Danang, Vietnam.
The missions are led by Dr. Ruth Connors (pediatric anesthesiologist), and the Lead Surgeon is Dr. Frankie Fraulin (pediatric plastic surgeon). Department of Surgery members who have joined missions as staff include Drs. Donald McPhalen, Rob Harrop, and Carolina Fermin. Surgical residents who have joined the missions include Drs. Jevon Brown, Vishal Sharma, Justin Yeung, Kimberly Sass, Brett Byers, Rebecca Hartley, Valerie Hurdle, Kody Johnson, Tom Cawthorn, and Michael Liss.
