Assessment Tools

Surgical Foundations has approved the OSCORE to be utilized in surgical rotations, and Program Directors have approved that up to eight scores should be completed each year. The tool allows you to receive feedback on your performance during surgical rotations. Review the OSCORE for your reference.

To utilize the OSCORE: Have one with you for key cases. Present it to your surgeon before the case, preferably the night before the case, and inform them that you would like feedback on your performance. After the case, have the surgeon complete the OSCORE. Program residents should collect the scores and provide them to their home program administrators.

The designers of the OSCORE suggest that cases should reflect standard cases in your discipline. For example, appendectomies, hernia surgery, cholecystectomy in general surgery, etc. You should obtain scores early in your rotation and for the same procedure later in your rotation so you can see how you have improved during the time on the rotation.
