The Division of Orthopaedic Surgery invites medical students in their clerkship year to do a two-week Orthopaedic Surgery elective at the University of Calgary. We also offer students from within the University of Calgary to complete a one- or two-week Orthopaedic Surgery selective during their core surgery clerkship, or a one-week pre-clerkship elective.

In this rotation, the student will work with an Orthopaedic Team of attending surgeons, and often fellows and/or residents, at one of the sites within Calgary (Foothills Medical Centre, Alberta Children’s Hospital, Peter Lougheed Centre, Rockyview General Hospital, or South Health Campus). The student will gain experience in patient assessment and management in the clinic and hospital setting, emergency room, cast room, and operating rooms. Participation in an on-call schedule is expected and will be arranged with the preceptor and resident team. Students should reach out to their designated team prior to their elective to discuss scheduling, objectives, and expectations.

Upon completion of this elective, the student should understand the basic principles of identification and management of orthopaedic emergencies, fractures and traumatic injuries, degenerative disease, congenital conditions, as well as tumors and infections of the musculoskeletal system. Most clinical teams will have a specific clinical focus or anatomical area depending on the assigned preceptors.
