Dr. Spencer McLean Award

Dr. Spencer McLean (January 20, 1977 - June 24, 2013) was an Orthopaedic Surgery Resident at the University of Calgary who passed away at the end of his residency after a 2-month battle with stage IV renal cell carcinoma. Spencer was academically gifted, emotionally intelligent, and treated those around him with care, trust, and compassion.  He was a devoted family member and educator.  Although Spencer would never waste a clinical teaching moment for those around him, he taught us more than he was aware.  Spencer’s lasting impacts teach us how to be good people, how to enrich life, how to live in the moment, how to build a sense of community, how to deal with adversity, and how to make the world a better place. The Dr. Spencer McLean Memorial Award is highly prestigious and awarded to one resident per year who embodies what Spencer was best known for: making a positive impact on those around him.
