The Section of Dentistry and Oral Health, Department of Surgery, University of Calgary is located at the Foothills Medical Centre and Alberta Children's Hospital. Learn more about our section below.

  1. Division of Adult Dentistry

    The Division of Adult Dentistry is composed of 10 General dentists that have AHS clinical privileges at FMC and all charted surgical facilities. Adult Dentistry cares for adults with special needs or medical concerns in which they cannot receive treatment in a community practice.

  2. Division of Pediatric Dentistry

    The Division of Pediatric Dentistry is composed of 20 Pediatric dentists that have AHS clinical privileges at ACH and all Chartered Surgical Facilities. Pediatric dentistry cares for children with special needs or medical concerns in which they cannot receive treatment in a community practice.

Dentistry and Oral Health also provides ambulatory care services in partnership with the Riverview Surgical Centre through its Chartered Surgical Facilities contract. Riverview Surgical Centre is used for patients who do not qualify for coverage, in order for them to receive the treatment they need.

The Foothills Medical Centre Dental Clinic provides dental care for adults with special needs or medical concerns which preclude them receiving treatment in a community practice. Patients may present with the following services or with one or more of the following conditions:

    • Adult special needs dentistry
    • Complex medical Comorbidities
    • Solid organ transplant - Restorative care
    • Cancer surgery - Preoperative care
    • General dentistry services under anesthesia
    • Oral surgery/oral pathology
    • Rare blood disorders
    • Emergency dental treatment
    • Biopsy of hard and soft tissue
    • IV sedation or nitrous oxide as needed
    • Consultation with periodontist, endodontist, or oral and Maxillary surgeon if required
  2. Medical Conditions/Standing:

    • Head and neck radiation
    • Bone marrow transplant
    • Solid organ transplant
    • Cardiac disease
    • Systemic chemotherapy
    • Physical, cognitive disabilities
    • High BMI
    • Suspicious oral lesions

The Alberta Children's Hospital Dental Clinic provides comprehensive dental, orthodontic and oral care to pediatric patients with medical complexities. Modalities include communicative behaviour guidance/non-pharmacological behaviour modification, nitrous oxide inhalation sedation, minimal/moderate oral sedation, and general anesthesia in the operating room. ACH dental specialists are also consultants for the Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Clinic, NAM Clinic, VPI Clinic, Orthodontic Clinic, OMFS Clinic, and TMJ Clinic.
