Child Abuse Service

Child Abuse Service

The Child Abuse Service, which is based at the Calgary & Area Child Advocacy Centre, provides consultation for suspected child abuse and neglect for children in southern Alberta, as well as neighbouring Saskatchewan and eastern British Columbia.

Physicians provide 24/7 consultation service for the areas of suspected physical abuse, sexual abuse, medical abuse and neglect for both inpatient and outpatient populations. In addition, our team provides indirect consultation with our partner agencies (Child and Family Services, Calgary Police Service, RCMP, etc.) through file review and daily triage. This collaboration allows for better information sharing and a more streamlined process for families.

A physician referral is required for all clinics. Please contact your physician or family doctor.

The medical service collaborates with the Calgary & Area Child Advocacy Centre to provide data that allows for analysis of child abuse statistics and outcomes in Alberta.

The Child Abuse Service does not currently offer a postgraduate diploma in Child Maltreatment. However, the physicians do provide education at all levels (UME, PGME and CME) through lectures, workshops and resident rotations in Social Pediatrics.

We are unable to provide elective opportunities in Child Abuse at this time.
