Palliative Medicine

The members of the Section of Palliative Medicine perform research, provide education and clinical services as part of an inter-professional program the Children’s Hospice and Palliative Care Service (CHaPS). CHaPS provides comprehensive palliative care to children and their families from the time of diagnosis of a serious illness through death and bereavement. The CHaPS consultation team (ASSIST) work in an integrated (blended) care model with a child’s other health care providers at all the acute care sites in Calgary, in the community and throughout southern Alberta. Children with serious illnesses and their families are also offered respite stays at Rotary Flames House to give parents short breaks from the intensive medical care they need to provide to their children 24/7 in their own home. As well as support for children who are living with serious illness and their families, comprehensive symptom management is provided for the dying child whether in the home, hospital or at Rotary Flames House, the only children’s hospice in Alberta.

The Section promotes ongoing research in collaboration with the Department and other partners.

Current projects include:

• Valuation of a trauma informed communication curriculum for physician trainees
• Examining the experience of children with life limiting illness and medical complexity in the emergency department environment
• The experience of program families through grief and bereavement
