Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Fellowship

Each year, the Calgary and Edmonton Sections of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery accept one surgical fellow at each site for advanced training. The Calgary fellowship specializes in orthognathic surgery, and the Edmonton fellowship specializes in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgery.

The fellowship program is an evidence-based, hands-on learning environment for oral maxillofacial surgical care. The fellow will gain extensive exposure to the consultation, diagnostic, and treatment planning processes as well as surgical correction of dentofacial deformities, maxillofacial pathology, and temporomandibular joint disorder.

The program provides candidates with the knowledge to assess, diagnose, and manage patients with congenital and acquired dentofacial deformities and maxillofacial disorders.

Program Goals

  • Upon completion, the fellow will have received comprehensive training and demonstrate in-depth knowledge of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
  • The fellow will be involved in pre-surgical assessment and planning, surgical treatment, and post-operative management of patients with dentofacial deformities and temporomandibular disorders.
  • The fellow will gain experience in medical and non-surgical management of temporomandibular disorder, dentofacial deformities, and facial pain.
  • The fellow will also gain experience in interprofessional collaboration and communication with oral and maxillofacial surgeons, orthodontists, oral pathologists, neurologists, dentists, and other surgical disciplines in the Calgary and Edmonton regions.

Program Structure & Function

The fellow will work alongside the precepting faculty at various facilities based on opportunities to observe and assist complex cases intraoperatively in the hospital and outpatient settings, allowing the fellow to individualize their training needs.

Consult and OR Days
The chosen fellow will be involved in one (1-2) consult day each week and four (3-4) OR days a week containing orthognathic, total joint replacement, pathology, reconstruction surgery, and surgical assistant opportunities.

Cases
The fellow can expect upwards of three (3) different cases per day to achieve proficiency in this subspecialty area.

On-Call Duties
The fellow will perform on-call duties 1 in 4 alongside a fellowship faculty member.
