Message from the Section Chief

Welcome to the Section of Plastic Surgery at the University of Calgary.

Plastic surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on the care and surgical restoration of structures of the body that are affected aesthetically or functionally by birth defects, tumours, injuries, diseases, and the aging process. Because of this, we operate on many anatomic regions of the body and collaborate with other specialties to solve a wide variety of problems. While some operations are common and routine, we are frequently presented with problems that have no “textbook” surgical solution. In these situations, we must create a novel solution using principles from other areas of plastic surgery, and for this reason, plastic surgeons often think of themselves as surgical innovators.

Following medical school, you must complete at least five years of Plastic Surgery residency training to be a qualified plastic surgeon in Canada. This training must be approved by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and following the completion of training, you must complete the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada specialty examinations. After completing the examinations, you will become a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Plastic Surgery.

As the Head of the Section of Plastic Surgery at the University of Calgary, my goal is to maintain our reputation as one of the best in Canada by:

• Recruiting and retaining faculty and trainees of the highest quality
• Promoting timely access to safe, high-quality plastic surgical care
• Establishing an environment conducive to professional and academic growth
• Fostering a culture of productivity in research, education, and innovation

There are currently 27 practicing plastic surgeons working in the five Calgary teaching hospitals. Collectively, our members have expertise in all areas of plastic and reconstructive surgery.
