Dr. Mike Hodsman
Mike Hodsman Memorial Lecture
The annual Mike Hodsman Memorial Lecture celebrates the life of our late colleague, Dr. Mike Hodsman and his great love of learning. Once a year, physicians from the department of emergency medicine invite colleagues from pediatric emergency medicine, nursing, urgent care and related medical specialties to join them for a full morning of excellent continuing medical education surrounding core theme identified as being high value to our learning needs.
The Hodsman Legacy Lecture 2026
The Calgary Department of Emergency Medicine's Hodsman Lecture Committee is excited to present this year's Hodsman Lecture Series:
FORENSIC FILES: PATIENT CARE AT THE INTERSECTION OF TRAUMA AND JUSTICE
April 16, 2026 from 8am-12:30pm in the Libin Theatre (Breakfast 8-8:15, intros at 8:15)
This multidisciplinary lecture brings together leading experts to explore the critical space where medicine, trauma care, and the justice system converge. The program features three compelling presentations:
• Calgary Sexual Assault Response Team (CSART) Overview, Tips and Tricks
Dr. Marta Broniewska (ER Physician and CSART physician) will provide an in-depth overview of CSART's integrated model of care, examining how coordinated, trauma-informed responses to sexual assault are delivered and what this means for frontline clinical teams.
• Legal Elements of Interpersonal Violence and Their Intersection with Medicine
Prof. Jennifer Koshan (Faculty of Law and Research Excellence Chair in Family Violence, University of Calgary LLM, LLB, BSc) will examine the legal frameworks surrounding interpersonal violence, equipping healthcare providers with the knowledge they need to navigate their roles as clinicians and potential witnesses within the justice system.
• Strangulation Protocols
Prof. Cath White (OBE, Medical Director of the Institute for Addressing Strangulation UK, Professor of Criminology, University of Manchester) will address the clinical identification and management of strangulation injuries - a critically underrecognized presentation in emergency and acute care settings - and outline evidence-based protocols for intervention in both pediatric and adult populations.
