Join us for the 42nd Annual Surgeons' Day on June 21, 2024 at the Libin Theater. Delve into research with Dr. Adam Kinnaird's McPhedran Lecture, Dr. Khara Sauro's McMurtry Lecture, faculty talks, rapid-fire talks, resident research showcase and sharpest knife competition.
Surgeons' Day
The Surgeon's Day Research Symposium is an annual event established in 1983. Originally founded to highlight the research activities of residents, it has since evolved and showcases both resident and faculty research.
The day is divided into multiple sessions, with each session focusing on of the OSR's pillars of research: Clinical Research, Health Systems, Basic Science, and Education. The event includes:

2024 MCPHEDRAN LECTURER
Dr. Adam Kinnaird, MD, PhD, FRCSC, University of Alberta, Division of Urology
Adam Kinnaird is a Surgeon Scientist and the Frank and Carla Sojonky Chair in Prostate Cancer Research in the Division of Urology, Department of Surgery at the University of Alberta. He completed a fellowship in Imaging, Targeted Biopsy and Focal Therapy for Prostate Cancer at UCLA. He completed his MD and Urology residency at the U of A, during which he was enrolled in the Clinician Investigator Program. He completed his PhD as a Vanier Scholar and was awarded the Governor General’s Gold Medal in research. He has published in high impact journals such as Nature Reviews Cancer, Cell, and European Urology and has been awarded funding from local, regional, and national grant competitions since starting as an Assistant Professor in November 2020. His lab studies translational prostate cancer research with a focus on new drugs, technologies, and devices. He is the principal investigator on multiple investigators initiated prostate cancer trials and participates in industry sponsored trials examining the use of state-of-the-art imaging techniques for prostate cancer diagnostics including PSMA PET, multiparametric MRI, and high-resolution micro-ultrasound.
2024 MCMURTRY LECTURER
Dr. Khara Sauro, PhD, University of Calgary, Sections of Community Health Sciences and Oncology
Dr. Sauro is an Assistant Professor and Ohlson Professor of Head & Neck Health, in the Departments of Surgery, Community Health Sciences and Oncology. As a Head & Neck Cancer Health Services Researcher, Dr. Sauro’s research focuses on improving the quality and safety of care for patients with cancer or patients undergoing surgery, but specifically patients with Head and Neck Cancer, to optimize the health of these patients. Dr. Sauro has a particular interest in leveraging routinely collected administrative data to evaluate the quality of healthcare and the application of knowledge translation and quality improvement methodologies for improving healthcare delivery. She uses diverse methodologies (qualitative and quantitative) to ask and appropriately answer clinically relevant research questions.
