What is Surgical Foundations?

Surgical Foundations is the initial period of postgraduate training needed to acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes underlying the basics to the practice of surgery and preparatory to further training in a surgical specialty or sub-specialty. For clarity, the junior surgical resident refers to any surgical resident in PGY-1 and PGY-2. These objectives refer to exit competencies for which a junior surgical resident must be evaluated by the end of PGY-2.

Surgical Foundations encompasses the core foundational surgical competencies that are required for the following surgical specialties:

  • Cardiac Surgery
  • General Surgery
  • Neurosurgery
  • Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery
  • Plastic Surgery
  • Vascular Surgery
  • Obstetrics & Gynecology
