Biography

Karen Fruetel is a specialist in Geriatric Medicine with a practice in acute care consultation at the Foothills Medical Centre, and an ambulatory practice in Calgary as well as working with the Rural Primary Care Network in Strathmore.   Outside of her love of working with the elderly in a team-based environment, her true passion is teaching.

Dr. Fruetel has a Masters of Education from the University of Toronto and has served as Program Director for Geriatric Medicine (University of Toronto) and Internal Medicine (University of Western Ontario) , before being recruited to come to Calgary in 2008.  She has been recognized with the Canadian Association of Medical Education with their Certificate of Merit and has been recognized with teaching awards at the University of Toronto, University of Western Ontario and the Cumming School of Medicine.  She is very proud to have been a Master Teacher since 2009.

She wears many educational hats including Master Teacher, Vice-Chair of Education for the Department of Medicine, and a member of the Geriatric Medicine Residency Training Program.  She enjoys small group teaching and teaching in the clinical context and is active in UME as well as PGME.

On a personal note, she has been happily married to Mike, a pediatric hematologist for 33 years and they are proud parents to 3 children. She is always happy to chat to people about a dual physician marriage and parenting, but no advice will be given, we all have our own journey!

A great day is one where teaching and learning were involved!!
