Postgraduate Medical Education
The goal of postgraduate medical education is to build on the foundation of undergraduate medical education, producing excellent physicians who will be certified by their national college. We strive for outstanding residency training programs that have mechanisms in place to teach and evaluate competence appropriate to the discipline.
Residency Programs
The Department of Surgery has 11 postgraduate residency programs that provide an excellent academic experience and lead to national college certification. We provide training in the following surgical specialties:

Surgical Foundations
Surgical Foundations is the initial period of postgraduate training required for residents to acquire the underlying basic skills and knowledge to practice surgery and prepare them for further training in a surgical specialty or sub-specialty. Our Surgical Foundations Program encompasses the core foundational surgical competencies that are required for the following surgical specialties:
- Cardiac Surgery
- General Surgery
- Neurosurgery
- Orthopaedic Surgery
- Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery
- Plastic Surgery
- Vascular Surgery
- Obstetrics & Gynecology
