Support & Well-Being

The pressures of residency training are numerous. Over the course of your training, you will experience numerous demands, and be required to juggle various responsibilities- education, professional, and personal.

Self-care is often something that can be easily set aside, or even sacrificed, during busy rotations. The Postgraduate Family Medicine Program at the University of Calgary is dedicated to supporting the health and wellness of its Residents.

The program wants to ensure that all residents are well supported with respect to their own personal wellness, and that of their families. Physician wellness is an important responsibility shared by individual physicians, the program, our profession, and healthcare systems.

At the start of residency training, we ask all residents to ensure they have their own family doctor. Having this set up early, ensures supports are already in place if any concerns arise and makes dealing with issues much smoother. All members of the Alberta Medical Association (AMA) has access to the Physician and Family Support Program (PFSP).

The PFSP provides confidential and free support to help with personal issues of both you and your immediate family (spouse/partner and children under 25 years old) and enhances the quality of patient care and public safety by promoting health and well-being for the medical profession that cares for Albertans. Please see the following information sheet. You can contact the PFSP directly, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, at 1-877-767-4637 (SOS-4MDS). To find out more about the PFSP, please go to their website.
