Program Description
The Department of Family Medicine offers a 12 month Enhanced Skills Residency Program in Sport and Exercise Medicine. The Program is fully accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
Program Overview
The one year Program consists of the following rotations:
Mandatory Rotations
- Cardiology and Cardiac Rehab - 2 weeks
- Eating Disorders/ Sleep Medicine/ Weight Management - 2 weeks
- Orthopedics – Sport Orthopedics - 4 weeks
- Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation - 2 weeks
- Radiology - 4 weeks
- Respiratory and Pulmonary Medicine - 2 weeks
- Sport and Exercise Medicine - 24 weeks
- Rheumatology - 2 weeks
Elective Rotations (Resident selects 4)
- Emergency Medicine - 2 weeks
- Orthopedic Surgery – Foot and ankle - 2 weeks
- Orthopedic Surgery – Shoulder - 2 weeks
- Orthopedic Surgery – Spine - 2 weeks
- Orthopedic Surgery – Upper Extremity - 2 weeks
- Orthopedics - Pediatric Sport Medicine - 2 weeks
- Other as approved by the ES RPC
Program Details
Sport and Exercise Medicine rotation (24 weeks).
· Residents are scheduled to work with all University of Calgary (UC) Sport Medicine Centre (SMC), Innovative Sport Medicine and Group23 Sports Medicine SEM physicians during regular clinic hours.
· Clinics include usual referral-based practice patients as well as the Acute Knee Injury and Acute Sport Concussion Clinics (self-referred).
· Residents are expected to assist the assigned UC SMC SEM team physician to provide medical coverage for all home games of the UC Dinos men’s football, men’s hockey, women’s rugby teams and home meets of the Dinos’ wrestling team. Residents will also participate in performing pre-season medical evaluations for these teams.
· There may be additional opportunities to participate in performing pre-season medical evaluations for Canadian National teams and be involved in medical coverage for other local sport events (e.g. national and international level long and short track speed skating competitions, Mount Royal University men’s hockey team, etc.). Being the main sports medicine clinic affiliated with the Calgary Stampede Rodeo and Cirque du Soleil residents get a unique and diverse opportunity to work with athletes in both rodeo and performance arts.
· Residents will be scheduled to observe at the UC SMC Physiotherapy, Athletic Therapy and Nutrition Counseling Clinics and Colman Orthotics.
· Ultrasound-guided injection clinics twice per month at Group23 Sports Medicine
Off-service rotations:
Residents will join off-service rotation preceptors in their clinics, which include the Foothills Medical Centre, Cardiac Wellness Institute (Repsol Centre for Sport and Wellness), Rockyview Hospital, Peter Lougheed Hospital and South Health Campus.
Scholarly Activity
· Attendance at UC SMC Teaching Rounds is mandatory
· Residents are expected to present one lecture at the UC SMC Teaching Rounds on a SEM topic of their choice.
· Residents are expected to attend the Canadian Academy of Sport Medicine Annual Symposium and write the CASEM Diploma Exam.
· Although not mandatory, residents are encouraged to undertake a research project during their Program.
