Sexual and Reproductive Health
Program Description
The Sexual and Reproductive Health Program is a new and innovative program offered at the Department of Family Medicine that is comprised of 13 blocks. This R3 is a one-year program that focuses on important care gaps in the health of women and sexual and gender minorities.
This R3 Enhanced Skills residency provides an opportunity for a family physician to obtain enhanced skills in many important areas not only in sub-specialty settings but also in primary care and community-based specialty settings. The R3 experience is focused on the needs of a broad community as well as, the unique needs of at-risk and marginalized populations.
The program offers a curated and horizontal approach to rotation selection. Experiences in sexual health, LGBTQIA2S+ health, pelvic health, care of patients that have experienced sexual violence and menopause & mid-life is required. Other experiences can include inpatient and outpatient experiences in pregnancy options, obstetrics including low risk and specialty care, infertility care, menopause care, infectious diseases & HIV care, perinatal mental health, breast health and sexual function. The program includes integration with relevant community partner groups and organizations.
The program will provide advanced competencies in comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care from adolescents seeking contraception to adults experiencing pelvic pain to older adults navigating menopause.
Assessment
This adult learner program focuses on a learner-driven portfolio with assessment based on ongoing formative feedback and assessment from faculty mentors and coaches. Assessment tools include reflective exercises, rotation performance and demonstrated commitment to the underserved populations this R3 serves.
Objectives
The program achieves its goals and objectives across a broad range of learning environments using interdisciplinary teams and community engagement as a core tenant of experiences.
Key objectives of this R3 including understanding the importance and interplay of gender and sexuality, recognizing and treating common sexual and genital health presentations, understanding trauma response and providing care to patients who have experienced sexual trauma, developing communication and medical skills to care for patients from sexual minorities, understanding how to care for common presentations for people in menopause and mid-life, developing skills to address concerns related to pelvic health and pelvic pain, and understanding the role of mental health and its intersection with sexuality.
The program will also include flexibility for interested applicants to dedicate time towards pregnancy options skill development and/or newborn & maternity care within the R3 program.
